chinese zodiac
Chinese astrology is the oldest systematic method of divination in the world. It has influenced and regulated the lives of many generations in the Far East since then. the practices dates back over 60 centuries. Its popularity was at its peak during the reigns of both Emperor Fu Hsi (2953 to 2838 BCE) and Shen Nung circa 28th century BCE), but its practices are still followed to the modern era.

The Chinese calendar takes into account both the sun's and the moon's revolutions. Chinese months are replicas of the moon's revolutions, or lunations. They invariably begin with a new-moon day. Chinese years are replicas of the sun's revolutions, or tropical years. They invariably begin with the second new-moon day after the winter solstice. Consequently, the Chinese year is solar rather than lunar. The date of the New Year feast is movable, and occurs between 21 January and 20 February according to astronomic circumstances.

The lunar calendar is the longest chronological record in history, dating from 2637 BCE when the first cycle of the zodiac was introduced. One complete cycle takes 60 years and is made up of five simple cycles of 12 years each. The 78th cycle started on February 1984, and will end in February 2044.

The Chinese zodiac

The zodiac consists of twelve animals were assigned, one for each year. According to legend, Buddha summoned all the animals to come to him before he departed from Earth. Only twelve animals came to bid him farewell. As a reward he named a year after each one in the order that it arrived: the Rat, the Ox, the Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Thus, we have the twelve animal signs of today. These twelve signs occur in combination with each of the Five Elements to create a unique combination for each of the sixty years in each cycle.

To determine your sign, use this formula, then consult the charts listed below to find out what your sign is (where * is anything before the decimal point):

[year of your birth] / 60 = *.[number for your sign]

Note: Keep in mind that the Chinese New Year is different from the conventional New Year of 01 January. Chinese New Year occurs on the second New Moon of the solar Year. For those born in January or February, your sign might still be the sign for the previous year. Consult an almanac to determine the precise New Year date for your birth year.
